With just a handful of episodes left, the questions are piling up on True Detective season two.

Who killed corrupt city boss Ben Caspere? Will Frank Semyon (Vince Vaughn) finally escape his life of mopey mobster-dom? Why did Ray Velcoro (Colin Farrell) shave off that Emmy-worthy moustache?

As viewers come to terms with tonight's plot-advancing fifth dispatch, here are seven True Detective imponderables that require urgent answering.

1: Who Is Bird Man?

We haven't seen the gunman with the crow mask since he or she unloaded a pair of rubber bullets at Ray at the conclusion of the season's second dispatch.

Where do they fit in the grand conspiracy? Is the esoteric disguise connected to the Egyptian-style bird carving that accompanied Caspere as the fresh corpse was driven around Vinci in episode one?

2: Did Frank Set Ray Up?

The relationship between the brooding gangster and the crooked cop goes back to the rape of Ray's wife. It was Frank who provided details of the culprit, upon whom Ray visited violent revenge. But we've just learned that the actual rapist was at large all these years.

Did Ray send an innocent man to his death? And was Frank wise to this all along? Maybe that's why he was so louche in his dealings with Velcoro.

3: Was "Ledo Amarillo" a wink to fans of True Detective season one?

The Mexican pimp was fingered for the murder of Caspere following episode four's Heat-style downtown shoot-out. But viewers understand he's a patsy and that the true murderer is still at large.

The internet has also pointed out that "Amarillo" is a corruption of the Spanish word for "Yellow" while Ledo is teasingly close to "Ledoux", as in Reggie – the meth-cooking swamp-rat likewise wrongly judged, in TD season one, to be central to a far-reaching conspiracy.

Is show-runner Nic Pizzolatto mocking our King In Yellow obsession from last year or perhaps slyly tipping a hat to it?

4: How Is Ani's Father Tied Up In All This?

Detective Bezzerides' irritating new-age guru dad has historic connections to Caspere and loathsome Vinci mayor Chessani. The indifference he displayed when talking about the (apparent) suicide of Ani's mother has confirmed he has a cold streak. Might he be a straight up sex-cult sicko with it?

5: Did Officer Woodrugh Really Black Out Before Sleeping With His Army Bro?

Woah – one moment Woodrugh (Taylor Kitsch) is freaking out over his Brokeback shenanigans with Black Mountain hombre Miguel, next he's waking up in Miguel's bed with no memory of what happened? Does he need to curb his drinking – or are more sinister forces at play?

6: What's On Caspere's Harddrive?

Sex party host Caspere had a penchant for videoing his orgies. Now he's dead – eyes burned out, perhaps symbolically – and his hard-drive is missing. What dark secrets are contained within – and who might they implicate?

7: What's Up with Ray's Incredible Vanishing Moustache?

Whither Ray's 'tache? That's the real whodunnit this year. Seriously – we need an answer.
