IT'S been the soap's most talked about storyline in many years - but will Katy O'Brien be escaping her captivity this weekend?

Fair City fans will be disappointed to hear kidnapping victim Katy will not be freed from her confines this weekend.

Rumours are rife online that Katy (Amelia Clarke Stewart) is going to escape her kidnapper Ciaran's clutches on Sunday night's episode after months of being held hostage.

However, a spokesperson for RTE has rubbished the claims and insisted the controversial storyline is set to continue for the foreseeable future.

"I can confirm that the Katy O'Brien storyline will not come to a conclusion this weekend," she told Independent.ie.

Katy has been under lock and key for the last 12 months, making her abduction one of the longest storylines in the soap's history.

Fans of the show have grown restless in recent weeks with the kidnapping, with an online petition created to convince Fair City writers to free her.

Over 7,500 people have signed the petition to bring the "tedious" plot to an end.

The national broadcaster previously said in a statement that ending the storyline too abruptly would not do justice to the show's characters.

"To have hastened this story would not have done justice to the ramifications of such an act upon everyone it touches," they said.
