Coronation Street actress Eileen Derbyshire will walk away from the cobbled streets of Coronation Street after more than 55 years on the soap.
The actress (85), who plays Emily Bishop on the soap, has made the decision to depart the street after a 12-month break, according to The Sun.
The long-standing soap actress has played Emily since 1961 and hopes to spend more time with her family following her retirement.
A source told the paper: “Eileen has been off for a long time, and there is no expectation that she will be back. All of her cast mates have accepted she won’t be returning.
“She’s 85 and has been out of the show for a year, so she probably would have found it tough to get back into the fast pace of filming."
The actress was involved in many juicy storylines down through the decades but her run in with murderer Richard Hillman in 2003 was perhaps the most nail-biting. The actress saw Emily through her days as a young woman on the lookout for love, to finding her beloved husband Ernest, who was killed in typical Coronation Street fashion in 1978, when he got in the way of a burglary.
Derbyshire was honoured by the Queen in 2010, when she won an MBE for her role in the soap.
