Red Rock star Richard Flood has revealed how hard it was to keep his character's brutal murder under wraps for an entire year.

Soap fans were left reeling last night after seeing Superintendent James McKay being stabbed to death in the show's biggest storyline yet.

His shocking murder outside the garda station came after he finally got Paudge to confess that he was the one leaking information to Beady Burke.

Rathfarnham native Richard (32) has said he knew from the very start that his character would be killed off, but he had been sworn to secrecy.

"On the first day ... they took me aside and said 'We're not going to tell any of the cast so if you can keep it a secret, it's just going to be much better'," he said.

He said the initial reaction from fellow cast members was "disbelief".

"People were genuinely shocked and then a bit emotional I guess because we had spent a lot of time together," he said.

Richard (32) now divides his time between Dublin and Italy, where he lives with his Italian fiancee Gabriella Pession (37) and their 17-month-old son, Julio.

Asked what was next for him, he said it was back to doing auditions and show reels.

"Like every other actor, I'm back on the audition trail, travelling to America. I have potential business opportunities there and just being a dad," he added.

His on-screen wife Pandora McCormick, who plays solicitor Claire Hennessy, said the entire cast were emotional wrecks after shooting the murder scene.

"I knew I was going to have to do a death scene from day one and I was so terrified," she said.
