'I don't think it was an attempt to play with the audience' - HBO president explains Jon Snow on Game of Thrones poster

We've been repeatedly told that Jon Snow is indeed dead, dead as a doornail.

So when he appeared on the Game of Thrones season 6 promotional poster it caused quite a bit of consternation.

At this stage the question of whether or not Jon has actually met his demise has grown rather tiresome, and the president of HBO has been forced to address the poster issue.

“I think we always have this conversation: how do we keep the fans, remind them the show is being produced and will be coming back?” Michael Lombardo told Variety.

“I don’t think it was an attempt to play with the audience as much to remind an audience of where we took them this season and the stakes of the next season,” he added.

Lombardo acknowledged the massive impact the poster had on the fandom but denied it was manipulative.

“It generated enormous interest in a number of ways, but … we take this show way too seriously and our viewers way too seriously to ever toy with them. I think it was really our intention to remind them ‘You have to come back.'” he said.

While Lombardo appears to suggest that Jon is really dead, he's hardly going to suggest otherwise and spoil the first episode of the sixth season, which will land on Sky Atlantic on Monday April 25.

At least we hope this particular conundrum will be resolved in the first episode.  If it's not there may be war...
