Dermot O’Leary on his return to X Factor: ‘Simon called me at midnight and told me he’d made a mistake’
Fans were devastated when it was announced that Dermot O’Leary would not be fronting last year’s X Factor but the presenter has opened up about the moment Simon Cowell offered him up a grovelling apology.
O’Leary, who has been reinstated, revealed that Cowell called him up in the dead of night and said: “I’ve made a mistake, I’d love to get you back.”
Speaking to The Sun, Dermot said: “It was a lot less awkward than I thought it was going to be.”
“Simon and I spoke about where we thought the show had lost its way and how to bring the heart and soul back.”
The presenter said the conversation has brought he and Cowell closer and improved their relationship.
“Actually, I think we’re closer now than we ever have been. We text all the time.”
O’Leary has reportedly been offered an new four-year contract by ITV which is believed to be worth more than £8m (€9.2m).
The star also fronts his radio programme on BBC Radio 2, a contract which is believed to be worth a further £3m (€3.4m)
