Sam Worthington has been arrested for allegedly assaulting a paparazzo.

The 37-year-old Avatar actor was taken into custody in Manhattan on Sunday, a police spokesperson tells RadarOnline.

The outlet reports Sam “punched a paparazzo who allegedly kicked his girlfriend, model Lara Bingle”.

The incident reportedly occurred outside a bar in Greenwich Village at approximately 5:30 p.m. local time.

“The photographer kicked Lara and then Worthington punched him causing the photographer to have lacerations to his nose,” New York Police Department Lieutenant John Grimpel told the website.

“He has been charged with assault. He punched the photographer," the lieutenant said.

Sam was reportedly released on bail shortly after his arrest.

He will be scheduled to appear in court at a later time.

The photographer was also arrested and charged with assault, reckless endangerment and harassment, according to the website.

The photographer’s name has not yet been released.

A spokesperson for Sam had not issued comment at press time.

It’s not the Australian actor’s first arrest. He was previously booked in Atlanta, Georgia for disorderly conduct after getting into a fight outside a restaurant in November 2012.

He later confessed he was to blame for the incident.

"I was a jerk. It was my fault," he told Australia's News Limited newspaper group last April. "I've admitted it. I was a jerk, I was in the wrong. Move on. That's it."

Charges against the actor in that case were later dropped.
