'We're keeping a very close eye on Gay' - says Ryan Tubridy at Late Late Toy Show launch
Ryan Tubridy has said that Gay Byrne "seems to be doing okay" following the news that doctors fear he has prostate cancer.
At the launch of this year's Late Late Toy Show, Tubridy said that he has been in touch with the legendary broadcaster and that he and the team at RTE are "thinking about him enormously."
"I haven't spoken to him by voice, but we have been in touch," said the presenter.
"He seems to be doing okay, and we're keeping a very close eye on him."
"He's an extraordinary person and he started all of this. I think the form is good and we are thinking about him enormously as an organisation, but also from me as a friend."
The Lyric FM presenter told his listeners last month that doctors fear the he has prostate cancer and that it may have moved into his back.
His wife Kathleen Watkins said last week that the veteran broadcaster has left hospital and thanked the public for their support.
"I want to really say a big thank you to the nation for the deluge of cards and well-wishes and phone calls and everything else, beautiful messages and loving messages for Gay; he really appreciates it all and so do we in the family," she told Live 95fm.
"He spent the week in hospital and he is coming home today, and from today we will know what the treatment is."
Details of Gay's treatment have not yet been revealed.
Tubridy was speaking at the launch of The Late Late Show, with The Jungle Book being this year's theme.
The Late Late Toy Show starts at 9:35pm on RTE One tonight.
