'Newstalk's flying, but I hope to get back on TV3' - Ivan Yates
Ivan Yates has revealed he is hoping to return to the small screen on TV3 in the future.
The former Fine Gael TD left his presenting gigs on Sunday AM and Newstalk last April in order to take a year's sabbatical with his wife, Deirdre.
While he's been back on the airwaves at Newstalk since April 2, Ivan is hoping to become a familiar face around the Ballymount studios once again.
"Yes, hopefully I will be back. I don't know, I have no plans at the moment but we will wait and see," he said.
The Wexford man (57) is thrilled to be back on the radio again.
"Newstalk is flying. I'm glad to be back there and I'm working hard," he said.
"This is the third week now so it's all good. I have no complaints. It feels good to be back, I'm enjoying being in front of the microphone again."
The broadcaster spent much of his time away from his media career travelling across the US with his wife.
The couple travelled more than 20,000 miles and visited 30 states before returning to Ireland after becoming "touristed out".
Ivan's two-hour programme airs from 11am to 1pm on Sundays and puts him in direct competition with RTE stalwart Marian Finucane's second weekend show. However, Ivan insisted he is not too bothered about what the competition is doing and prefers to focus on himself.
"I don't really worry about it. I do my own thing, I just focus on the knitting," he said.
Ivan is an avid racegoer and attends the Fairyhouse festival each year.
"I came straight out from Newstalk and jumped into a taxi. I'm here for the two days, I come every year," he said.
"It's great racing, it's very hard to get the right Willie Mullins ones. I backed Yorkhill. Because of the rivalry between Willie Mullins and Gordon Elliot, it's exceptionally good."
