Newstalk's Dil Wickremasinghe and her partner Anne Marie Toole welcome baby boy Phoenix
Newstalk presenter Dil Wickremasinghe and her partner Anne Marie Toole are celebrating the birth of their first baby boy, Phoenix.
Phoenix was born in the early hours of Sunday morning and Dil took to Twitter to post a photo of the happy trio following his arrival.
Along with the photo, Dil wrote, "Baby boy Phoenix was born at 2.05am. Our wish for a child & a home birth came true -looking for a hat trick #VoteYes"
Dil (41), who presents Global Village on Newstalk (Saturday 7-9 pm), and Anne Marie (34) met at a weekend mental health conference in Wicklow, on April 30 2010.
On speaking publicly about their joy at expecting a baby together, however, they were subjected to online abuse during Dil's pregnancy apparently because the baby has two parents of the same sex.
Some accused them of inflicting a form of child abuse on the baby by making it "fatherless by design," which particularly upset Dil, who is a survivor of child sexual abuse.
She was also upset when David Quinn of The Iona Institute tweeted, 'Who's the father?'
Speaking to the Sunday Independent at the time, Dil said, "I was thinking that this may have been how the victims of mother and baby homes felt years ago.
"They were pregnant outside the traditional structure of marriage, and some parts of society felt entitled to call them horrendous names, like "fallen women" and "sinners," and say their innocent children were "illegitimate" and "bastards."
"There are people out there who are trying to devalue my pregnancy and cheapen my experience of becoming a parent.
"Thankfully, the majority of people have been absolutely amazing and so supportive, because for every negative tweet I have received, there were 100 positive ones."
