Ian Dempsey 'thankful' his earnings aren't public knowledge after RTE revealed its highest salaries
Today FM presenter Ian Dempsey admits he's glad he doesn't have to reveal his earnings to the public after RTE revealed its highest salaries.
The national broadcaster released its top 10 highest paid presenters on Tuesday - who earned a combined €2,665,364 in 2014 alone.
Ryan Tubridy raked in the most with annual pay package of €495,000, followed by Joe Duffy with earnings of €416,893 and Marian Finucane in third place with fees of €295,000.
Dempsey, a former RTE broadcaster and presenter, now the host of Today FM's breakfast show, says one of the perks of working for the private sector is that he doesn't have to reveal his earnings.
"Obviously I'm not going to reveal that because I work in the commercial and independent sector," he told The Star.
"So it doesn't become public. It must be a bit strange for the people whose salary does become public, but thankfully for me it's a secret between myself and my employer."
RTE's release sparked controversy with many claiming the high wages the broadcaster pays its presenters are "scandalous".
While the figures may seem high, RTE said it has slashed the earnings of its top 10 presenters by 40pc over the space of six years.
"It's an open market out there and people have to negotiate and you can't blame the guys out there taking the best deal they can get," said Dempsey.
