After more than 20 years with the national broadcaster he is now working for Radio Nova and investing in start-ups.

"Since leaving RTE a year-and-a-half ago, I have had a chance to smell the roses, at least metaphorically," said the former Criemcall presenter.

As well as his business interests and radio work Mr Murphy also reports for rugby channels on YouTube.

"It was a big decision to leave a well-paid, safe job with the national broadcaster at a time when the financial situation here was so precarious," he said.

The radio presenter said that had he not jumped ship from RTE in 2012 he would have never left that job.

"I figured if I didn't make the move then I would be there (RTE) for the rest of my working life," Mr Murphy said.

The broadcaster finds that he has more time to meet family and friends now that he is no longer working a hectic schedule at the national station.

"Although I miss many of my ex-colleagues from RTE, I find I hae more time now to meet them for coffee or lunch in the afternoon to catch up," said Mr Murphy.

He enjoys also meeting his parents for lunch once a week, something he said he could never have done while at the "coalface" in Donnybrook.
