Talk about Japan beating South Africa. It was beyond my comprehension when I checked with Fearghal O'Boyle from Spain that Team Ireland didn't even make the final of the Camrose trials, so now we have a brand new team of David Walsh, Donal MacAonghusa, Enda Glynn and Ciaran Coyne . Tom Hanlon and Hugh McGann will complete the team the first weekend, with John Carroll and Tommy Garvey called in for second weekend.
Over €8,000 in prize money is a good reason to make Drogheda Congress a must this coming weekend. This event starts with mixed pairs on Friday at 7.45pm, pairs for all levels at noon on Saturday. Teams on Sunday, again at noon. There are also Grand Prix prizes for all grades and for open pairs. Entries to Peter Byrne at 086-8049531 or firstname.lastname@example.org. There is also a website at www.bridgewebs.com/droghedabridgecongress.
There's also a Peter McVerry Trust fundraiser at the Louis Fitzgerald Hotel, Clondalkin on October 4 at 7.15pm.
Well done Richard Elvin. He raised over €2,000 for Crumlin Children's Hospital, thanks for splendid support at Ballyroan Community Centre.
Here is a most amusing hand from that event. Just suppose to add to the fun you pass with the W hand. Now N will automatically open 1Nt and on a normal sequence you get to 4H and W doubles. This goes 10 down. With 23hcp you don't make a single trick. Of course, the 17-count makes 7C.
