Sir Mick Jagger, 66, came over all hoity-toity when he was asked if he could ever envisage retiring quietly to a bungalow in Surbiton, the south London borough.
"A bungalow in Surbiton?" Sir Mick retorted, incredulously. "I don't know if I have ever been to Surbiton."
The Rolling Stone is now setting up home uptown in Cheyne Walk with his girlfriend L'Wren Scott. But Ian McDonald, the Mayor of Kingston, which includes Surbiton, says Sir Mick must have forgotten his connections with his area. He says Sir Mick regularly performed in the borough in Tolworth and Kingston in his band's early days.
And he adds: "The association with Surbiton was cemented in the late 1990s when he was portrayed running a corner shop with his band mate Keith Richards in the BBC series Stella Street."
Paul Johnston, a Tory councillor, says Sir Mick had “a bit of a Zone One attitude”.
