Pig's head stunt shocks motorists

THE unsettling sight of 30 pigs' heads nailed to stakes around Waterford city's main thoroughfares yesterday resulted in gardai being inundated with complaints.

The heads, nailed to stakes about five feet in height, were spotted by commuters around 6am. The majority were placed on roundabouts, at Tescos and Superquinn supermarkets, close to Waterford Regional Hospital and Rice Bridge.

The Red Kettle Theatre Company who placed the props around the city in the early hours of Wednesday morning are staging a performance of 'Lord of the Flies' next week, a key scene in which shows a group of boys hunting pigs after being marooned on an island.

Mary Breen of the city council's environment office said workers were removing the heads as they were not sure who placed them.

"They are a health concern and had to be removed," she added.

John Tierney of the Hunt Saboteurs of Ireland said the stunt was "really sick".

A similar stunt to promote a play was carried out several years ago, when boxes were placed around the city with parachutes attached.

Catherine Collins, administrator of the theatre company, said she understood people may be upset by the stunt, but added: "There are worse images on TV and if people want to give the play a miss because of this then that's their choice."
