More than just a pretty face

It's a rare occasion when columns such as The Insider get to mention The Economist, partly because it's a magazine for grown-ups. But the esteemed publication has chosen celebrity hip-wiggler Shakira (right) as one of its 'Most Important People of 2010'.
It's not her ability to wriggle, writhe and warble that landed the South American singing sensation such high acclaim thought. Shakira is being hailed for her work with Barefoot, a charity that helps promote the importance of education.
After such highbrow recognition, sexy Shakira has been invited to speak at Oxford University.
Celebs can be a clued-in bunch. George Clooney spends his time campaigning to stop the Iraq War and preventing genocide in Darfur. And Sharon Stone has visited Israel to promote peace. Let's just hope she remembered to put knickers on.But not every 'star' is so cerebal.
Take Brooke Hogan, singer, reality TV star and daughter of wrestler Hulk Hogan. When she was asked what she thought about Hillary Clinton running for president, she replied: "You know what? I think it's kinda crazy that a woman is running, because I think that women deal with a lot of emotions and menopause and PMS and stuff." Yup, the suffragettes are still spinning in their graves.
