'I don't know how we avoided bringing out any sex tapes'

After 20 years as a duo, Ant and Dec look back on the highs and lows of their climb to the top, writes Niamh Horan

Most celebrities would chalk down presenting the Brit Awards in front of five million people as somewhat of a career milestone.

But then again television stars Anthony McPartlin and Declan Donnelly -- better known as Ant and Dec -- aren't like most celebrities.

The two presenters almost forgot to include the star-studded night in their autobiography Ant and Dec, Ooh! What A Lovely Pair when putting their latest venture together.

"We got a big A3 sheet of paper," explains Dec, "and we did a big squiggly line marking '1989' at one end and 'Now' at the other and filled in our career all along the way."

"There was loads of stuff we forgot we'd done," Ant chimes in (the two have a quirky habit of finishing each other's sentences) "And at one stage we were like 'didn't we host the Brits once? God we did!' You forget you see," he says matter-of-factly, not batting an eyelid at the incredible CV they've amassed along the way.

"But Wikipedia really helps."

The two burst into laughter for the hundredth time that evening. We're in a suite of The Fitzwilliam Hotel on St Stephen's Green and you'd be forgiven for thinking the life-long friends were on a weekend break to Dublin rather than coming towards the end of a gruelling day's promotional work.

But such is the joy of indulging in your passion for the past 20 years -- and bringing your best mate along for the ride.

After meeting as 13-year-old boys on the set of Byker Grove -- they didn't like each other much to start with -- the pair worked hard over the past two decades to establish themselves as the undeniable champions of British Saturday night television.

These days they are regular presenters on several high-profile shows, including I'm A Celebrity ... Get Me Out Of Here!, Ant & Dec's Saturday Night Takeaway and Britain's Got Talent.

And they've clocked up 'Most Popular Entertainment Presenters' for the eighth year running along the way.

"It's kind of a tough one," muses Dec. "I don't know why people have taken to us. I suppose they have an affinity with us, in that everyone has a best friend and they can identify with our relationship and we try to include the audience in it as well and make it a bit of a three-way thing."

Dec, who has strong Irish connections -- both of his parents hail from Derry and his childhood holidays were spent on his relation's farms in the Irish countryside -- says he still comes back to Ireland every year to get away from it all.

"All the neighbours come round and we'll have a big barbecue and drink long into the night so I love going back."

I enquire as to whether he has any long lost loves from his days spent rolling around in the hay, or memories of an Irish lass who stole his heart?

"God no, stay away from that," pleads Dec, who is currently dating Sky Sports stunner Georgie Thompson and is in the middle of building his dream home.

Ant is married to long-term partner, make-up artist Lisa Armstrong.

Indeed with their 'cheeky chappie next door' demeanour, the pair have managed to steal a few more hearts along the way: an entire nation of viewers has fallen in love with their antics and even Bono got somehow managed to get sucked in.

"We were doing [the music show] CD:UK and U2 were on the show so the following week we did a prize giveaway for tickets to see them play in Slane Castle," says Ant, breaking into a smile at the memory. "And we said as a joke 'isn't it nice of Bono to throw in some tickets for us and put us up in his hotel in Dublin --isn't he such a nice guy' and then we went to a break and forgot all about it.

"That's when a phone call came to the production office and it was their tour manager to say that Bono was watching the show," he laughs incredulously.

"And he said 'you're a pair of cheeky gits and he'll do it'. So we flew over, went to the gig and stayed in the Clarence Hotel."

"We went up to the top floor of the hotel afterwards and we were there with our producer and we had an amazing night," Dec continues.

"Ireland had just qualified for the World Cup," adds Ant, "and England had just beat Germany five-nil so everybody was in flying form.

"Later Bono came over to us and we got all excited and he put out his hand to say thanks for coming and Phil our producer got all nervous and he started just talking and he took Bono by the hand, looked him in the eye and said . . . it's been a beautiful day," the pair again erupt with laughter, grabbing their heads and cringing.

"And we were like 'oh you're joking'," recalls an embarrassed Ant. "And Bono just looked at him kinda like 'are you taking the piss?' and walked away."

For the past 20 years, whenever something embarrassing or brilliant has happened to them, Ant and Dec say they'd turn to each other and say: "One for the book."

And it's these kind of typical quirky innocent stories that the book is peppered with, which begs the question, where are all the skeletons?

"They're just not in the book", laughs Dec. "We met when we were very young and we've been working ever since so we haven't had a chance to collect many skeletons in the closet."

"We need to take a year off," quips Ant, "I don't know how we avoided sex tapes."

With reports of hundreds of adoring fans queuing all night for a signed copy of their autobiography, another programme, Name That Tune, in production and countless more awards to rack up, something tells me it'll be a long time before the Geordie duo get around to making a raunchy movie.
