Willy Wonka star Jonathan Slinger takes the golden ticket to chocolate factory
Theatre star Jonathan Slinger has admitted he does not have a sweet tooth, despite currently starring as the new Willy Wonka in Charlie And The Chocolate Factory.
Talking about his new role, Slinger joked: " There's so much chocolate flying around this place that if I did have a sweet tooth I'd be as fat as a hound."
Directed by Sam Mendes, the theatre show celebrates its second year anniversary this year.
Slinger has taken over from theatre veteran Alex Jennings, best known for portraying Prince Charles in The Queen.
On his Wonka character, he said: " I see him as having many sides to him. He's clearly an endearing and appealing figure but there's also something a bit dark about him, something a bit mysterious, lonely, melancholy and sad."
He also said he finds it refreshing that no one in the current cast is "famous".
"None of us (in the musical) are big massive screen stars," he said. "It's quite refreshing for a director because when you look at most of the things in the West End, they are crammed full of people who are recognisable off the TV or off films."
