Viva, for one night only

Viva is the name of Maria Tecce's new show in JJ Smyth's on Dublin's Aungier Street tonight at 8.30pm. Backed by Mike Nielsen (guitar), Francesco Turrisi (accordion/ percussion) and Damian Evans (double bass), she will lend her inimitable touch to songs by Astor Piazzolla and Antonio Carlos Jobim, as well as jazz standards, Argentinian tango and Spanish ballads.

Maria won't be performing in Dublin again until September 2010, so now's your chance to hear her before she heads off. Her forthcoming engagements include the Leicester Square Theatre, London; the Belltable Arts Centre, Limerick; and the Town Hall Theatre, Galway.

The guitar trio of Hugh Buckley, John Stowell and John Feeley can be heard at 3.30pm this afternoon in the Druid Theatre as part of the Galway Jazz Festival, which ends tonight. The same venue presents the Julia Hülsmann Trio at 7pm.

The Buckley group will return to Dublin for a concert in JJ's tomorrow night. John Stowell has worked with everyone from Milt Jackson to Dave Liebman.

John Feeley, a classical guitarist from Ballinasloe, has built up an international reputation soloing with symphony orchestras, as well as recording with the Chieftains. He is Professor of Guitar at the DIT College of Music.

Hugh Buckley needs no introduction, being a stalwart of the Irish jazz scene for many years. It will be interesting to hear these three very different guitarists together.

Alex Mathias (tenor sax) has attracted a lot of attention around town lately, notably as a member of the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra. Next Sunday night in JJ's he will lead a quintet with Linley Hamilton (trumpet), Johnny Taylor (piano), Damian Evans (bass) and Dominic Mullan (drums), in a tribute to Charlie Parker.
