Travie McCoy has told how he shed tears recording a song he wrote about his break-up with Katy Perry.
The 28-year-old, who is taking time out from his band Gym Class Heroes to release solo album Lazarus, penned Don't Pretend after the couple split 18 months ago.
"That song is the most introspective and personal on the album - in a sense, I felt I'd had my heart ripped out; I'm crying throughout the song," he told the Daily Star.
But Travie said recording the single has been cathartic in dealing with the end of the relationship with Katy, who is now engaged to funnyman Russell Brand.
"The album is about coming out the other side of something really painful. Getting all those feelings down was therapeutic and now I feel like I've drawn a line under the relationship," he continued.
"Don't Pretend... gave me closure. It wasn't my intention to hurt anyone by writing these songs, or throw dirt on anyone's name."
