Liberal Democrat leader Tim Farron declared himself "speechless" after being introduced to Wendy Smith from 1980s band Prefab Sprout.

Mr Farron told an activist at the party's conference yesterday that the keyboard player and singer was his "teenage pin-up" and the person he would most like to meet.

He said Prefab Sprout was the "greatest band in the history of ever" and admitted he had previously contacted Smith in the hope of winning her support for his leadership bid without getting an answer.

The MP, who played in a band variously known as The Voyeurs or Fred The Girl in his youth, spoke to Smith directly for the first time while being interviewed on BBC Radio 4's Today programme.

When she asked how he was, Mr Farron replied: "A bit speechless."

Smith, now director of musical charity Sage Gateshead, said: "I am really delighted to talk to him today and I would really like to have more conversation with him about music.

"It is great that Tim is passionate about music and I'd really like to see how that transforms into political policy that shows what music can achieve, addresses social inequality and supports children and young people's music making."

But Mr Farron may have some work to do to convince his musical heroine to support the Lib Dems.

Asked whether she had ever voted for the party, Smith said: "I'm not going to comment on that."
