Speaking before their Oxjam gig in east London, Tim revealed that the musician, who has been diagnosed with a brain tumour, is doing well following an operation.

"It's really early days yet, but yeah, he's doing good, as well as can be expected I imagine - I mean he's talking on the phone and he's not on as much morphine as he was," he said.

But he added: "It's a very serious thing that happened. He's not in intensive care anymore, he's had an operation. They've taken out a tumour. It's really difficult to talk about."

Ex-Verve drummer Pete Salisbury filled in for Jon as the band performed in front of bookshelves and record stands at the the Oxfam shop on Kingsland Road in Dalston. Pete will also play with the band for their UK dates.

"One minute we were playing a gig, the next minute it's kind of a whole different kind of event," he said.

The band then went on to perform My Foolish Pride as a tribute to Jon, with Tim telling fans: "It's been a funny couple of weeks. This next one is for Jon."

Following Jon's collapse on stage during a Philadelphia gig, the band postponed their US dates.
