Three essential releases

David Bowie -- Heathen
Bowie had an astonishing 1970s -- reinventing himself tirelessly and releasing one great album after the next.
For much of the 1980s and 1990s, his music failed to catch fire but this 2002 album marked a dramatic return to form, reuniting him with producer Tony Visconti.
Johnny Cash -- American IV: The Man Comes Around
Released in 2003, this boasts one of the greatest covers of all-time as Cash takes Nine Inch Nails' 'Hurt' and imbues it with the sort of emotion that only a man facing death in the face can muster.
The accompanying video -- directed by Mark Romanek -- is a classic.
Tom Jones -- Praise & Blame
An astonishing rehabilitation from the Welsh wonder that proves just what a great voice he had all along.
His new approach is particularly well served with his take on Bob Dylan's 'What Good Am I?' while his lung-busting vocals on the John Lee Hooker number, 'Burning Hell', are a revelation.
