Three Cheers for inventive post-punks
(School Boy Error)
Surprise nominees for the Choice Music Prize a couple of years back, the Dublin-based outfit return with an album that's inventive and derivative in equal measure.
At their best, The Cast of Cheers deliver the sort of pulse-quickening guitar music popularised by bands like Bloc Party and Foals a couple of years ago.
It's all about disoriented rhythms, angular guitars, assertive basslines and yelped choruses.
There's an anthemic quality to their more memorable songs, with the excellent Trucks at Night well capable of crossover appeal.
Yet, too often, the band struggle to rise above their post-punk influences and several songs fail to blossom as spectacularly as they might.
