The first instalment in our new series introducing up and coming Irish bands sees Buffalo Sunn perform 'Ocean, and tell us who they are and what they're about...
Who are you?
Daniel Paxton (songwriter, guitarist and lead vocalist), his brothers Conor (bass and pedal steel guitar), and Neil (keys and backing vocals), Patrick McHugh (guitar and backing vocals) and Donagh O’Brien (drums).
Tell us about the band's origins?
We have been in existence for 2 and half years. Born out of different projects, Buffalo Sunn is now our bread and butter.
What makes you unique?
We don’t aim to re-create the wheel, we blend a healthy mix of rock n roll, country and folk. Throw in our love of three way harmonies and you can hear what makes us unique, to us at least.
What is this particular song about?
Ocean is about getting away from reality to a place where things make sense, a place to clear one's head and in this case, the ocean.
We have a huge range of influences that range from country, rock, folk, Americana. To be honest we like the best bands and artists out of most genres but we have a big love for harmonies whether it be Abba or The Beach Boys. It's something we like to listen to, it's a craft worth admiring.
Beatles or Stones?
First album you each bought?
Daniel: "I think it was an Ice T record. I was down with that when I was 12."
Patrick: "BeatStreet soundtrack when I was 7 or 8."
Best gig you ever played?
One that stands out would be when we were touring the west coast of America in March. We played a sold out show in the Doug Fir lounge in Portland Oregon.
Favourite venue to play and why?
We really want to play Vicar Street. Can someone make this happen?
