The Chieftain and the Mexican

Saturday June 06 2009

Ry Cooder, who plays Dublin's Olympia Theatre this coming Thursday and Friday, is collaborating on a new album with Paddy Moloney and The Chieftains. Paddy and Ry have played together in the past and Ry is already on a few tracks on the new album, which will probably be called San Patricio.

It's based on the story of an Irish battalion led by John Reilly, who deserted from the American army in the late 1840s to fight with the opposing Mexicans and made their last stand in a convent. According to Paddy, they deserted because they did not want to shoot Catholics.

Ry will be performing with his drummer son Joachim, accordian ace Flaco Jiminez and bassist Nick Lowe. And Paddy will also be going, so don't be surprised if you see him on stage with them!
