Other stars appearing at the event, which runs from June 30 to July 17, include Icelandic singer Bjork and Sinead O'Connor.

Festival director Alex Poots said: "MIF is a home for major artists to realise their most ambitious projects and we are grateful to them for entrusting their work to us."

Victoria Wood will stage her play, The Day We Sang, which is set in 1969 and is about a middle-aged couple who 40 years earlier sang on stage at the Free Trade Hall in the city.

Other highlights include a show written by and starring Blur frontman Damon Albarn, inspired by the life of Elizabethan alchemist Dr John Dee.
