Rocket Man takes a pop at modern songwriters

Even in Elton John's pomp, members of the senior generation were not averse to uttering: "All pop music sounds the same."
Now, at 63, John has decided the time is right for him to point it out as well.
In a withering attack on the music industry, he said today's pop songwriters were "awful" and warned that television talent shows failed to produce genuine stars. Elton, who started out playing piano in his local pub at 15, said artists needed to experience "hard graft" if they were to succeed.
And he claimed few of today's recording artists wrote their own material, depending on the songwriters instead. "Songwriters today are pretty awful, which is why everything sounds the same. Contemporary pop isn't very inspiring."
He also confessed he turned down a judging role on the US talent show 'American Idol'. (© Daily Telegraph, London)
