Prince's role in TV comedy New Girl will involve him giving relationship advice to lead character Jess, played by Zooey Deschanel.

The Purple Rain star is a big fan of the show and got in touch with Zooey to ask if he could make a cameo appearance, to help Jess and her boyfriend Nick (Jake Johnson) with their relationship, E! News revealed.

Executive producer Brett Baer revealed: "He contacted us last season because he's a huge fan.

"He knows everything about the show. He contacted Zooey and Hannah [Simone, who plays Cece Parekh] directly and asked to do the show. We couldn't work it out last year. But when the Super Bowl thing was floated, it was perfect timing."

Executive producer Dave Finkel added: "He said, 'I want to be involved in the show in a real way and I want to help Nick and Jess with their relationship.

Brett added: "He's a Nick and Jess shipper! He's right in the middle of trying to help them work through some stuff and it's amazing. His thing was all about getting to Jess and trying to bring out this inner part of her that hadn't been brought to the forefront. The word hip tips was sort of the thing. He put it, I think I can give her some hip tips!"

The 55-year-old singer will make his cameo in the episode of the show that will air on US TV directly after the Super Bowl on February 2. The epsiode sees Jess invited to a mansion party hosted by Prince - which her friends are all determined to gatecrash.

The New Girl producers revealed Prince surprised everyone with his skills as a comedian.

Dave said: "He's genuinely funny. He's got a very quiet, wry sense of humour but he kills. He has crazy comic instincts."

Brett added: "He knows that his value as a persona is doing as little as possible. But those little possible moments he knows exactly how to play it and exactly how to give. You forget that he's done a bunch of movies. He's directed a bunch of movies. He understands the medium."
