A MAJOR exhibition which gives a unique insight into the background, work and life of Irish musician Phil Lynott opens in Dublin this Friday.

Marking the 25th anniversary of the death of the Thin Lizzy singer, who died on January 4, 1986, thousands of fans from around the world are expected to see the biggest collection of memorabilia, song lyrics, paintings and photographs of the rock singer.

The Irish Independent was given an early preview of some of the items, which include a humorous small ad penned by Phil. Approached by a UK magazine in 1978 to write an "amusing" lonely hearts ad for a Valentine's Day feature, the singer had written:

"Wanted attractive female twins for one tall dark Irish black man. Hobbies: to be discussed. Musical taste: Rock 'n' Roll Thin Lizzy etc. Please send a photo reply to box no 142. Do not print home address as my wife reads mail. Signed lonely boy."

The same article features the lyrics to 'Dear Miss Lonely Hearts', a solo 1980 hit from the Dublin-born rocker.

Less rock'n'roll is a picture of the singer after making his confirmation in Dublin in March 1961 and a certificate for the confirmation which Lynott needed in order to marry Caroline Crowther on February 14, 1980.

'The Philip Lynott Exhibition' opens on the top floor of the Stephen's Green Shopping Centre on Friday.
