The One Direction film made almost £3.5 million at the box office in the first weekend after its release.

Figures from the British Film Institute (BFI) showed ticket sales of £3,471,872 for One Direction: This Is Us at the 476 cinemas that showed it in the UK.

It also raked in £11 million in its opening weekend in the US.

The next biggest-earning film in the UK was Matt Damon's science-fiction thriller Elysium which made £1,210,315 in ticket sales.

The 3D One Direction film, directed by Super Size Me filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, is a behind-the-scenes look at the boy band as they embarked on their mammoth This Is Us world tour.

Thousands of fans gathered in London's Leicester Square last month to greet Louis Tomlinson, 21, Zayn Malik, 20, and 19-year-olds Liam Payne, Harry Styles and Niall Horan at the film's world premiere.

Harry described the "intimate all-access" film as a love letter to their fans, known as Directioners.

"We made this for the fans. We just want to say a massive thank you to them," he said.

The band was put together during the 2010 series of The X Factor and, despite coming third behind winner Matt Cardle and runner-up Rebecca Ferguson, they have gone on to be one of the talent show's biggest success stories.
