It's quite a distance from Mullingar to New York's Madison Square Garden but that is the journey One Direction's Niall Horan has made.
The lone Irishman in the world's biggest 'British' pop group, 19-year-old Horan is regarded as the unsung hero in the line-up – the owner of a sweet voice and epic quantities of lad-next-door charm.
Indeed, the argument may be advanced that Horan has played a crucial part in helping One Direction break the US.
While tousled posh boy Harry Styles is deemed the 'fanciable' one in the UK, in America teenagers have fallen for Horan.
This has propelled him towards genuine stardom – with over six million Twitter followers he is the most popular Irish person on the web.
However, life hasn't been all sunshine and screaming girls. Horan's parents divorced when he was five.
Prior to entering The X Factor and joining One Direction, he attended Mullingar's Colaiste Mhuire, where he was in the school choir.
Predictably his romantic exploits are the subject of frenzied tabloid speculation. The latest rumour is that he is stepping out with drama student Amy Green.
