New Academy Awards music event
The Oscars are set to showcase songs nominated for Academy Awards at a live concert, it has been announced.
Beginning next year, the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences will feature the songs and scores in an event a few days before the awards ceremony, Variety said.
It is hoped that the nominated songwriters and the original artists will perform their own songs at the first concert, which will not be televised, and takes place on February 27 at the University of California at Los Angeles.
"This concert is truly a milestone in Oscar music history, placing Oscar-nominated music centre stage in what will hopefully become an annual event," music-branch governors Charles Fox, Arthur Hamilton and David Newman said.
"A symphony orchestra of Los Angeles studio musicians will perform a suite from each score of up to 10 minutes in length.
"Subject to availability, each original composer will conduct his or her own work."
While the singers and songwriters of nominated songs have performed their tracks on the Oscarcast, "the musical scores... have not been performed on the Oscars in a fully realised way because of the length of the show."
The 86th annual Academy Awards will be telecast on March 2 next year.
