Rebecca Collins - Solar (Mutineer) The Tramore, Waterford-native is probably better known in Denmark than in Ireland: she used to live in Copenhagen while fronting a fine indie outfit called The Unusual History of Ether.

3.5*

Those who heard that band’s offering, especially the impressive A Distant Age album, will be aware of Collins’s considerable gifts as a vocalist and lyricist and this eclectic solo effort enhances that reputation further.

Fans of Portishead and PJ Harvey will find a kindred spirt here as Collins weaves a spell with arrangements that centre on organic instrumentation, but also find room for electronic flourishes. While some songs struggle to take flight, others really are something: ‘This Sensual Pursuit’, in particular, is a gorgeously honed composition that deserves a wide audience.

The album was released last year, but slipped under the radar of many. With Collins playing a show in St John’s Theatre, Listowel, Co Kerry on Thursday, now’s as good a time as any to investigate.

Key tracks: ‘This Sensual Pursuit’; ‘Creepeth the Thrill’
