The You Don't Know Love singer (32), who co-presented with 36-year-old Caroline Flack until last February, said: "Caroline and I felt we could do something different, but I don't personally believe we were allowed to be different."

"Sometimes it felt like we were reading the script that Dermot O'Leary would have done the year before."

The entertainer also discussed his forthcoming album, due for release in November, saying he had played a dozen songs from it to ex-girlfriend Francesca (27) to get her app- roval as she had inspired them.

He quit the presenting role on the show that made him famous after only a year.

Murs shot to stardom with his performances on The X Factor in 2009 when he finished second.
