WATCH: Bono, Sinead O'Connor, Niall Horan and co's video for Band Aid 30

The Band Aid song has made its hotly-anticipated debut on the X Factor - as bookies revealed the charity single is odds-on favourite to be the coveted Christmas number one spot.

The reworked version of Do They Know It's Christmas? features some of Britain's biggest popstars including One Direction, Rita Ora and Bono, and is expected to raise millions to help fight Ebola in West Africa.

The video began with a shocking scene of an Ebola-stricken woman being stretchered out of her home, before moving on to show the host of stars recording the track in the studio.

And its architect, Bob Geldof, appeared in the show to make an impassioned plea for people to buy the record and join the fight against Ebola.

He said the song is "a little bit of pop history" but added "t he reason they came yesterday, and the reason Simon wants you to see this is because this thing could arrive on a plane here any time."

He said Ebola created "mothers not able to touch their baby" and "husbands and wives not able to touch each other in the last moments.

"This is the most inhuman disease out there, but we can stop it and we will stop it."

Geldof added: "X Factor, we go to war. We are going to stop this thing."

The single comes 30 years after the release of the original Band Aid track, which raised funds to tackle the 1984 Ethiopian famine.

Geldof has said he wants this latest effort to be "a phenomenon" and capture the public's imagination like the first did.

Bookmaker Coral said it has taken "a flood of bets" on 4-6 favourite Band Aid 30 becoming Christmas number one this year. It is released tomorrow morning.

It was a disappointing night for former soldier Jay James who was eliminated from the show.

The 30 year-old battled it out in the sing-off against Stevi Ritchie, and whilst his rendition of Lily Allen's version of Somewhere Only We Know went down well, the judges were split.

Despite weeks of stinging criticism of Ritchie, Mel B opted to send James home throwing the judging panel into deadlock.

James, from Saundersfoot, Wales, was booted out after receiving the fewest public votes. He told viewers: "It has been absolutely incredible."

Earlier, X Factor favourites Nicole Scherzinger and Olly Murs both performed their new singles.
