Adele broke down in tears and delivered emotional tributes to her long-term partner, her son and fellow singer Kesha during the Brit Awards on Wednesday night.

Adele was the big winner at the 2016 Brit Awards on Wednesday night, picking up four awards: Best Album, Best Female Solo Artist, Best Single and the Global Success Award.

“I nearly fell over!” she squealed as she hit the stage at London's O2 Arena to pick up her second award - a gong for her single Hello.

"I was not expecting this one at all, thank you very much. It’s getting out of hand already. Absolutely blown my mind, thank you darlings."

She barely had time to sit down before she was called back on stage to collect the award for Global Success, presented via satellite from British astronaut Tim Peake.

The singer struggled to hold back her tears as she accepted her award.

"Not bad for a girl from Tottenham who don't like flying," she said after a few expletives were muted from air.

In between sobs she added: "I don’t know whether I’m crying over that video or the fact Tim Peake presented it. My son loves you."

"You’ll all be f**king bored of me... I was lost for a while and for you all to be so kind to me..."

Before she closed the ceremony with a spine-tingling performance, Adele was presented with the award for British Album and returned to the stage to deliver one of the sweetest tributes of the night.

"I'm really sorry about swearing earlier and I'm really sorry for the ugly cry face," she said.

"I don't want to sound a bit cheesy but thank you to my fans. You are so amazing, thank you so much. Honestly. You're incredible. You blow me away every time."

After thanking the people she worked with, the notoriously private musician took a moment to thank her long-time boyfriend and her son.

"I'm going to embarrass you. I'm sorry. I'm so lucky to have you love me the way you do... really, really and to support me.

"This album was really hard to make, it was and I think I was a nightmare sometimes."

She added: "Thank you for my lovely son who is the love of my life.  I love you so much. This is all for you peanut (Angelo - her son).

"You're all amazing. I'm so honoured to be here with you."

Earlier in the night, Adele used her time on stage to send a message of support Kesha.

“To come back after so long away and be so warmly received is really lovely, thank you so much,” said Adele. “And to all the other girls that are nominated, Thank you for letting me be in your company. You’re all incredible, you’re all amazing and it’s a privilege to be alongside you.”

After thanking her label and management “for embracing the fact that I’m a woman,” Adele referenced Kesha’s lawsuit against Dr. Luke in front of Sony executives who were no doubt in attendance, adding: “I’d also like to take this moment to publicly support Kesha.”
