After that performance last year, Miley Cyrus knew all eyes would be on her at the 2014 MTV Video Music Awards.

And the former Disney star put that profile to good use as she opted not to walk onstage personally to accept her Video of the Year award for Wrecking Ball, but instead asked a homeless teenager to accept the award on her behalf.

Late night chat hot Jimmy Fallon, who previously hosted the awards ceremony, was presenting the top award of the night and handed the microphone to her chosen representative, Jesse from the My Friend's Place organisation.

"Thank y'all, my name is Jesse and I am accepting this award on behalf of the 1.6 million runaways and homeless youth in the United States who are starving, lost and scared for their lives right now. I know this because I am one of these people," he said, as a teary Miley looked on.

"Though I may have been invisible to you in the streets, I have a lot of the same dreams that brought many of you here tonight."

Miley's decision to let someone else accept her award to promote a cause was reminiscent of Marlon Brando's 1973 Academy Awards best actor win, when he gave a Native American activist the stage rather than accept his Oscar trophy.

Miley explained her decision on her Facebook page, saying: "Help me raise awareness and funds to end youth homelessness! This is just the beginning for me, but we’re going to get started now by focusing on My Friend’s Place, a homeless center for young people in Hollywood.

"You can support the cause by making a donation here:www.prizeo.com/miley! For every $5 donation, you’ll be entered to win a trip for 2 to Brazil to hang out with me at my show in Rio de Janeiro on Sept 28th. You’ll get the full VIP experience, including 2 of the best seats in the house."

Earlier in the evening, Cyrus let Ed Sheeran know how she feels about him by calling him as 'a**hole', after he skipped her during a round of high fives as he approached the stage.

He was thrilled to win Best Male Video for Sing and slapped hands with many of the people surrounding the night's big winner, but skipped over her.

She then screamed 'a**hole' at the singer.
