Soul legend Lionel Richie says female Irish fans still throw their knickers at him on stage.

Speaking to Ireland AM's Anna Daly in an exclusive interview airing Monday September 29, the 65-year-old crooner said they're still throwing after all these years, and added, "The Irish audiences make me pick up my game!"

Lionel plays two shows in Dublin and Belfast in March next year, and he asked Anna whether or not Irish audiences head to the pub before the show, to which she replied it could be "quite likely".

Anna previously interviewed Lionel in 2012 in Monte Carlo and she asked him which musicians he listens to when he wants to get romantic.  At the time he said Sting and Coldplay,.

However, this time he has changed his mind.

“If there's lyrics, that's wrong. I want a sexy classical guitar, a very sexy piano and maybe some strings but I always said to myself, and now that I'm a little older, do I really need any help in the bedroom by having my fellow artists come in and help me out?

"No! So Sting, stay out of the room because I've finally realised I can do this alone and I have enough going on!!”

Speaking about his daughter Nicole, Lionel explained that as a father and grandfather, he is in a very happy place in his life.

Lionel also appears on Nicole's new US reality TV show, Candidly Nicole and says that he is “seeking an upfront fee for his appearance” to freak her out as she's been winding him up her whole life so he's simply getting her back.

He also tells Anna that “you get to see her [Nicole’s] humour, her happy family and that the grandkids are finally realising that 'pop-pop' maybe sings for a living!”

The full interview will air on Ireland AM on Monday September 29.  Ireland AM airs 7am – 10.00am on TV3.
