Nicky currently presents the Nicky Byrne Show with Jenny Green on 2fm but has recently confirmed he had returned to the studio to record new music.

Speculation has been mounting that RTE will scrap the open Eurosong competition and select Nicky internally.

Speaking to Anton Savage on Today FM, the Voice of Ireland coach Kian said it was "great" news.

"I think it's great for Nicky and great for Ireland, in both senses," he said.

"I know Kian is eager to get solo material out there and this is a great way to do it.  It's a great launch pad for him.

"He would represent the country very well.  He's a great singer, great performer, he obviously has tonnes of experience after being in Westlife for 15 years.

"When I first heart it I was like, wow, good on him.  It's great for him and great for Ireland.  We might bring Eurovision back to Ireland.

"Johnny Logan would want to watch out, Nicky Byrne is hot on his heels!"

RTE l;ast night refused to confirm the rumours to Independent.ie.

A spokesperson said: "RTÉ will be making an announcement regarding our selection process later this month - all details will appear on rte.ie in due course."

Speaking on the Nicky Byrne Show on 2fm on Thursday Nicky said, "I don't comment on rumours, I never have done.  Anything you read are unconfirmed reports."
