The British boyband devastated fans when they announced in August that they would be taking a break for 12 months from March this year.

That break has since been extended to 18 months, but now US Weekly reports that a "source close to the boy band" reveals they will split for good.

The source claims that the Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, Harry Styles and Liam Payne did "not renew their recording contract" after their finished their tour in October.

"The 1D thing just ran its course.  They'll remain friends, but they are exhausted and want solo careers."

Liam recently told the Sunday Times Style magazine that they were a "mess".

“Basically, we are all a mess,” he said. “None of us ever gets enough sleep. It’s intense, but you’ve got to be grateful for that. You’ve got to be grateful there are people screaming for you, standing outside your hotel room.”

However, he insisted they would return as a band.

“We’re not going anywhere,” he insisted. “In five years we’ve done four tours, five albums, we’ve done films. I’ve not even watched our films, because we are always running for the next thing. I’m really conscious that all this crazy stuff has happened to us and, you know, I haven’t even taken it in. “We can’t ever answer questions properly because stuff hasn’t sunk in. I want to just sit still and let it sink in. We just want a little break.”

Niall reiterated the fact that it is not a permanent split in November.

Speaking to Entertainment Tonight he said, "We’re not breaking up.  We're literally taking time out to see our friends and see our family, and reflect on what we've done over the last few years."

The band performed their last concert on the On The Road Again World Tour in November after nine months on the road during which they lost band member Zayn Malik, who decided he wanted to be a "normal 22-year-old" and has since recorded solo projects.

It is believed the foursome will pursue solo projects during their break.
