Meanwhile Adele's 2015 success streak shows no sign of slowing after she won two prestigious gongs.
The Hello singer was named British Artist of the Year and also took home the BBC Live Performance of the Year title for Adele At The BBC, a BBC One special.
Adele was not at the ceremony but sent a message to her fans, saying: "Sorry I'm not there, I'm absolutely gutted but thanks so much for my award. Thank-you so, so much. I hope you're all having a wonderful night."
The ceremony, held at the Genting Arena in Birmingham, saw five awards handed out.
Global superstar Taylor Swift was crowned International Artist of the Year and she also sent a video message to her fans from Australia, where she is currently touring.
She said: "I wish I could be with you right now but I'm on tour in Australia. Thank-you so much for this BBC Music Award for International Artist of the Year.
"It was an amazing highlight of the year for me getting to play Big Weekend in Norwich. You guys have been so supportive and wonderful. Thank-you so much, it's amazing."
Newcomer Jack Garratt was given the BBC Music Introducing Artist of the Year Award.
The evening was hosted by Chris Evans and Fearne Cotton, and saw performances from Ellie Goulding, Little Mix, OMI, One Direction and Rod Stewart.
During an interview with Radio 1's Greg James and Alice Levine, 1D's Liam Payne said the atmosphere backstage was "very friendly".
He said: "It was nice (backstage), I went and chatted to OMI, Hozier and Jess Glynne."
When asked about his conversation with OMI, he explained: "I went into the studio with him a while ago and showed him some of the things that I had done and then forgot to send it to him, so he asked me where was the call. I was like I'll be in touch, I've been busy. He's a lovely man."
