The night belonged to Adele who bagged four awards and provided us with the most entertainment of the night with her touching, and sometimes expletive-laden, speeches.

Overwhelmed with emotion, the 27-year-old endearingly acknowledged the love she's received from her boyfriend and fans and used her time on stage to publicly support fellow singer Kesha.

Annie Lennox presented the Brit's' Icon Award to the late Bowie, who passed away on January 10, with a speech in which she called him "a quintessential visionary" and "the ultimate iconoclast."

His friend, actor Gary Oldman carried on from Lennox with a moving insight into the Bowie's character.

"I can share with you that David faced his illness with enormous dignity, and grace, and customary humor. Even in dire circumstances."

Oldman revealed that when Bowie told him of his cancer, he wrote: "'The good news is, I've got my cheekbones back.' He was the sweetest soul ever, with the best cheekbones, until it was done.

"David, you were mortal, but your potential was superhuman, and your remarkable music is living on. We love you and we thank you."

Justin Bieber took home the award for Best International Male.

It was the second time the Canadian singer has been awarded at the Brits, with his last nomination coming back in 2011 when he won the International Breakthrough act prize.

Speaking to the crowd, he said: "This shows life is a journey everyone has their own journey, everyone has their ups and their downs. I want to thank all my fans."
