Music fans call for ABBA reunion

Tuesday November 24 2009

ABBA is the band the British public would most like to see reform, according to a new survey.

Music fans said Gimme, Gimme, Gimme more ABBA, with the Swedish popsters bagging a quarter of the vote, more than the combined number for The Police and Pink Floyd in second and third places respectively.

The disco pop group also beat a host of other respected British rock acts including The Smiths, Oasis, The Jam, Dire Straits, The Clash and The Sex Pistols, the survey by royalties organisation PRS for Music found.

Although members Anni-Frid Lyngstad, Bjorn Ulvaeus, Benny Andersson and Agnetha Faltskog have never officially announced their split, their last public performance together was in 1982.

ABBA's members have since said there is no motivation to reform and the group, now in their 50s and 60s, said they would prefer to be remembered as young and exuberant.

But indie music fans still hold out hope for The Smiths' frontman Morrissey and guitarist Johnny Marr rekindling their friendship to reform the rock group, with 11 per cent of those surveyed saying they would like to see them back together.

Fellow Manchester rockers Oasis have barely broken up and music fans are already clamouring for the Gallagher brothers to patch up their differences; one in 10 of those polled said they wanted the band back together.

And it seems the public's desire for more 'Girl Power' has finally waned with The Spice Girls sitting in ninth place in the survey with just four per cent of the vote. Punk legends The Sex Pistols rounded off the chart in 10th spot.
