More Kings of Leon than the Followills
The Weeks - Dear Bo Jackson (Columbia) 4 STARS
Signed to Kings of Leon's own label (under the auspices of Columbia), The Weeks are a bunch of Tennessee upstarts whose rowdy, giddy rock is cut from similar cloth to the Followill clan.
But while KoL have been happy to sacrifice some of their charm for the lure of the stadia over the past five years, The Weeks offer a pulse-quickening reminder of what Caleb, Jared, Mathew and Nathan used to sound like.
Brother in the Night is a dirty, Southern boogie, Ain't My Stop is a defiant celebration of the joys of youth (the oldest member is just 24) while Gobi Blues features lashings of steel guitar and startling gothic imagery.
While there's little innovative about their brand of sludgy rock, The Weeks have confidence in spades and their cocksure songs are likely to enjoy wide appeal.
Future Slane headliners? Don't bet against it.
