Miley Cyrus poked fun at the furore surrounding her performance at the MTV Video Music awards as she appeared on Saturday Night Live.
The singer sparked controversy with her saucy routine at the MTV show, where she twerked at Robin Thicke while wearing a nude bikini and touched herself suggestively with a foam finger, and has also been in the headlines for scantily clad photoshoots and appearing naked in a music video.
She addressed the scandal on the US show, insisting: " I don't apologise for my VMA performance. If I owe anyone an apology, it's the people who make the bottom half of shirts."
Miley also said: "I got a lot of angry letters from mothers, letters from turned on fathers and - this is true - I even got one from the guy who invented the giant foam finger. I promised him tickets to my show."
She added that she wouldn't be twerking, explaining: "There will be no twerking tonight. I used to think it was cool but now that all the white people are doing it, it seems kind of lame."
And she said she wouldn't be playing her best-known character Hannah Montana during the episode. "But I can give you an update of what she's up to," she said. "She was murdered."
One sketch suggested that Miley's MTV performance had led to the ruination of America.
An incarnation of the star's former image, 'Old Miley', warned her that her routine might be too controversial and they discussed whether Miley should go ahead. When Miley said: 'I'm only 20 years old, I need some freedom to grow up and make mistakes. What's so scandalous?" her former persona replied: "Maybe it's your performance?"
Miley was also quizzed about why she keeps sticking her tongue out and joked: "I'm having tiny strokes yo!"
The star was also the show's musical guest, performing two songs.
