Miley Cyrus has admitted her ‘Wrecking Ball’ video was inspired by Irish singer Sinead O’Connor’s 1990 worldwide hit ‘Nothing Compares 2 U’.

The 20-year-old said she also thinks that her 2013 video will become an iconic music piece that people will still be talking about in 30 years time.

“[‘Wrecking Ball’ video] is like Sinead O’Connor’s video but, like, the most modern version,” Miley told Rolling Stone magazine.

“I wanted it to be tough but really pretty. That’s what Sinead did with her hair and everything.”

Miley channelled the Dubliner’s hit as she is filmed singing in an up-close shot, tears streaming down her face.

Adding in her own controversial personality, however, Cyrus proceeds to swing naked on a wrecking ball and pose provocatively with a hammer for the remainder of the video.

Whereas O’Connor’s catalyst for tears was her late mother, Miley said she thought of one of her dogs that had passed away.

Many have suggested that her split from actor Liam Hemsworth could also have been inspiration for her emotional lyrics.

“I think it will be one of those iconic videos too,” Miley said.

“I think that it’s something that people are not gonna forget.

“Hopefully an artist 30 years from now will be like, ‘You remember that Miley Cyrus video? We gotta do something like that’.”

However reaction from her fans on Twitter is mixed, with many expressing their disappointment that the raunchy video has taken away from the song.

“wrecking ball is actually an awesome song but miley naked & making out with a sledge hammer really takes away from the video” one said.

“Wrecking ball is such a good and meaningful song, why did the video have to wreck it” another tweeted.

Meanwhile another complained: “Why does she always have to be so overly sexual? The song is sad, why are you swinging naked on a wrecking ball?”
