THE Kilkenny Arts Festival begins on Friday and runs until Sunday, August 15. As usual, there's a strong jazz element on the programme.

Dublin Standard Time is a quartet with Michael Buckley (tenor and soprano sax), Myles Drennan (Fender Rhodes), Michael Coady (bass) and Sean Carpio (drums). They play in the Set Theatre, 69 John Street, Kilkenny, next Sunday night at 9pm.

Celebrating the centenary of Django Reinhardt's birth, Evan Christopher (clarinet) leads Django a la Creole in the same venue on August 11, with David Blenkhorn and Dave Kelbie (guitars) and Sebastien Girardot (bass).

St Canice's Cathedral hosts Tarab, Francesco Turrisi's oddly appealing mixture of jazz, classical, Irish and Mediterranean sounds. The Italian pianist leads a group with Nick Roth (sax), Kate Ellis (cello), Emer Mayock (flute) and Robbie Harris (percussion) at 1pm on Saturday August 14. That evening, Honor Heffernan sings with the Dublin City Jazz Orchestra in the Hotel Kilkenny at 9pm.

Back in Dublin, Louis Stewart plays today and every Sunday in the Dark Horse, 1 George's Quay, from 5.30pm to 8pm. Tonight Tommy Halferty (guitar) plays in JJ Smyth's.

In Wales the Brecon Jazz Festival (August 6 to 8 ) is well worth the trip. It opens with the Dave Stapleton Quintet and closes with the rousing South African music of Hugh Masekela. Scott Hamilton (tenor sax) will lead a quartet with Rossano Sportiello (piano), Dave Green (bass) and Steve Brown (drums).

Jacqui Dankworth and China Moses will be among the singers at Brecon.
