The former Beatles are to be honoured at the Academy's Special Merits Awards the day before the January 26 awards night.

The day after will see a number of big artists, including the Eurythmics, playing Beatles hits at a special concert. Annie Lennox and Dave Stewart will perform as a duo for The Night That Changed America: A Grammy Salute To The Beatles.

The event will be taped at the Los Angeles Convention Centre on January 27. The special will air on CBS in America on February 9 - exactly 50 years after the Beatles made their US debut on The Ed Sullivan Show. An estimated 73 million viewers tuned in to watch the event, which has become one of the world's top cultural moments.

Sir Paul's nominations this year include best rock song and music film.

Other Grammy performers include Taylor Swift, Macklemore And Ryan Lewis, Kendrick Lamar, Robin Thicke and Katy Perry. Sara Bareilles will sing with Carole King, while Stevie Wonder, Daft Punk, Nile Rodgers and Pharrell will perform together.

The Grammys will air live on CBS from the Staples Centre.
