The song - complete with the rap originally voiced by winger John Barnes - topped the chart and was almost twice as popular as its nearest rival, Three Lions by David Baddiel, Frank Skinner and the Lightning Seeds.

The results, based on more than 11,500 song choices on karaoke website luckyvoice.com since 2010, showed the New Order track got 41 per cent of votes.

Three Lions, which was released in support of the England team at the 1996 European Championships, picked up 25 per cent of the votes ahead of two tracks by Fat Les - a band made up of Blur bassist Alex James, actor Keith Allen and artist Damien Hirst.

The top five was completed by Shout For England - a collaboration by rapper Dizzee Rascal and actor James Corden for the 2010 South Africa World Cup.

Songs inspired by this year's tournament including a new version of Take That's Greatest Day featuring Gary Barlow and Gary Lineker and a reworking of Monty Python's Always Look On The Bright Side Of Life have barely troubled the charts

Lucky Voice's managing director Nick Thistleton said: "As a football-mad nation, we never tire of the age-old debate around what makes a good football anthem. So, when Sport Relief unveiled the official England song in March to mixed reviews, we decided it was time to find out what England fans really want to sing.

"Our Lucky Voice Online Karaoke catalogue lets users sing from literally thousands of songs - and unsurprisingly we always see a surge in popularity of football anthems around the World Cup".
